9 Then Job answered:
2 “Truly, [ b ] I know that this is so.
But how [ c ] can a human [ d ] be just before [ e ] God? [ f ]
3 If someone wishes [ g ] to contend [ h ] with him,
he cannot answer [ i ] him one time in a thousand.
4 He is wise in heart [ j ] and mighty [ k ] in strength [ l ] —
who has resisted [ m ] him and remained safe? [ n ]
5 He who removes mountains
suddenly, [ o ]
who overturns them in his anger, [ p ]
6 he who shakes the earth
out of its place [ q ]
so that its pillars tremble, [ r ]
7 he who commands the sun,
and [ s ] it does not shine [ t ]
and seals up [ u ] the stars,
8 he alone spreads out the
heavens,
and treads [ v ] on the waves of the sea. [ w ]
9 He makes the Bear, [ x ] Orion, [ y ] and the Pleiades, [ z ]
and the constellations of the southern sky; [ aa ]
10 he does great and
unsearchable things, [ ab ]
and wonderful things without number.
11 If [ ac ] he passes by me, I cannot see [ ad ] him, [ ae ]
if he goes by, I cannot perceive him. [ af ]
12 If he snatches
away, [ ag ] who can turn him back? [ ah ]
Who dares to say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 God does not restrain
his anger; [ ai ]
under him the helpers of Rahab [ aj ] lie crushed. [ ak ]
14 “How much less, [ al ] then, can I answer him [ am ]
and choose my words [ an ] to argue [ ao ] with [ ap ] him. [ aq ]
15 Although [ ar ] I am innocent, [ as ]
I could not answer him; [ at ]
I could only plead [ au ] with my judge [ av ] for mercy.
16 If I summoned him, and
he answered me, [ aw ]
I would not believe [ ax ]
that he would be listening to my voice—
17 he who [ ay ] crushes [ az ] me with a tempest,
and multiplies my wounds for no reason. [ ba ]
18 He does not allow [ bb ] me to recover [ bc ] my breath,
for he fills [ bd ] me with bitterness.
19 If it is a matter of
strength, [ be ]
most certainly [ bf ] he is the strong one!
And if it is a matter of justice,
he will say, ‘Who will summon me?’ [ bg ]
20 Although I am
innocent, [ bh ]
my mouth [ bi ] would condemn me, [ bj ]
although I am blameless,
it would declare me perverse. [ bk ]
21 I am blameless. [ bl ] I do not know myself. [ bm ]
I despise my life.
22 “It is all one! [ bn ] That is why I say, [ bo ]
‘He destroys the blameless and the guilty.’
23 If a scourge brings
sudden death, [ bp ]
he mocks [ bq ] at the despair [ br ] of the innocent. [ bs ]
24 If a land [ bt ] has been given
into the hand of a wicked man, [ bu ]
he covers [ bv ] the faces of its judges; [ bw ]
if it is not he, then who is it? [ bx ]
25 “My days [ by ] are swifter than a runner, [ bz ]
they speed by without seeing happiness.
26 They glide by [ ca ] like reed [ cb ] boats,
like an eagle that swoops [ cc ] down on its prey. [ cd ]
27 If I say, [ ce ] ‘I will [ cf ] forget my complaint,
I will change my expression [ cg ] and be cheerful,’ [ ch ]
28 I dread [ ci ] all my sufferings, [ cj ]
for [ ck ] I know that you do not hold me blameless. [ cl ]
29 If I am guilty, [ cm ]
why then [ cn ] weary myself [ co ] in vain? [ cp ]
30 If I wash myself with
snow-melt water, [ cq ]
and make my hands clean with lye, [ cr ]
31 then you plunge me into
a slimy pit [ cs ]
and my own clothes abhor me.
32 For he [ ct ] is not a human being like I am,
that [ cu ] I might answer him,
that we might come [ cv ] together in judgment.
33 Nor is there an
arbiter [ cw ] between us,
who [ cx ] might lay [ cy ] his hand on us both, [ cz ]
34 who [ da ] would take his [ db ] rod [ dc ] away from me
so that his terror [ dd ] would not make me afraid.
35 Then [ de ] would I speak and not fear him,
but it is not so with me. [ df ]
